Karas Wine is a wine producer based in the Armavir province of western Armenia, established by uncle and niece team Eduardo and Juliana Del Aguila Eurnekian, who also run Patagonian winery Bodegas del Fin del Mundo, in Argentina. It is one of the country’s most high-profile wineries. Operating under the Tierras de Armenia company, Karas sources fruit from around 400 hectares (1000 acres) of estate vineyards. Numerous varieties are planted on the dry, volcanic soils of the region, including Chardonnay, Viognier and the native Armenian white: Kangun. Red varieties include Argentinian flagship Malbec, Tannat, Syrah, Montepulciano, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The indigenous Areni and Khndoghni (also known as Sireni) are also used in the wines. The wines are made by Argentinian winemaker Gabriel Rogel alongside renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. The winery is somewhat controversial in Armenia as the term “Karas” refers to an earthenware amphora similar to Georgian qvevri or Spanish tiajas and the Eurnekians have been involved in legal wranglings over the name.
