Some say the number 13 is unlucky, but not for this little gem from Glenrothes. Plus, why would they call it a baker’s dozen if it was unlucky, who doesn’t want an extra loaf? Distilled in 2009, the single malt spent 13 fortune-filled years maturing, including a finish in an oloroso octave.
Nose: Cinnamon swirls with dustings of cinnamon sugar. Toasted sourdough with butter and honey, bubbling caramel, and juicy raisins.
Palate: More patisserie notes, with the crisp buttery pastry and creamy custard of a pastel de nata, chased by a peppering of gingersnap biscuits.
Finish: Rich, sweet malt brings notes of simnel cake and toasted marzipan, while warming spice tickles at the edges.
The Glenrothes distillery is quite substantial; its ten stills have a capacity of over 5.6 million litres annually. The distillery runs at 90% of this and stores the maturing single malt whisky in the sixteen onsite warehouses. Despite this, Glenrothes preserves a rather artisan identity and have shied away from producing a traditional range. Perhaps it is down to current licensees, Berry Brothers and Rudd, the famed London wine merchants. Glenrothes single malt whiskies are offered as a range of vintages.
