We’ve been uncovering some real gems for our exclusive bottling collection recently, like this single grain Scotch from Girvan! Distilled in 1990, when bucket hats and baggy denim were in fashion, the whisky was bottled up in 2022 when… bucket hats and baggy denim were back in fashion. A release of 248 bottles.
Nose: Crunchy Nut cornflakes, mellow, buttery oak, vanilla pod and toasted oak drizzled with syrup. A touch of polished pine/pine oil/wood polish in time, with hints of drying spice.
Palate: Rich, juicy grain coats the mouth with creamy vanilla, while drying oak rests in the depths. Hints of underripe plum and warm rice pudding, a dash of nutmeg, soft sponge with stewed fruit.
Finish: Apple crumble with sugared breadcrumbs and ginger remain with a rich balance of fruity sweetness and spice. Butterscotch, mulled apple juice.
In 1963, William Grant and Sons built the Girvan Distillery as a staple source of grain whisky for blending purposes. The distillery is sited within an unused munitions factory from World War Two, sited in the Lowlands. Girvan has an impressive production capacity of fifteen million litres annually. The Ladyburn distillery was built within the Girvan complex in 1966, though it shut in 1975. Aside from producing a blending component, Girvan also releases single grain whiskies, many of which have received wide acclaim. In 1995, the single grain Black Barrel was released in France, Spain and Portugal.
