        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The top wine, the Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red, emerges from a vineyard northeast of Calistoga. Revealing exceptional intensity, along with a flamboyant, open-knit personality, the 2002 Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red (two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot, and a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc) exhibits a deep purple color along with sweet fruit, and juicy, smoky bacon fat notes intermixed with creosote, creme de cassis, scorched earth, and toasty oak.
        • James Suckling: This wine starts with a dense, rich core of fleshy, mocha-laced currant, fresh earth, plum and blackberry fruit, firming up with rich, chewy tannins, but the flavors push through on the finish, revealing added facets of depth and concentration. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

        Producer Information

Ramey Wine Cellars is a Californian wine producer, located in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Founded in 1996 by David Ramey, it produces a collection of wines sourced from multiple Californian AVAs (American Viticultural Area) with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah the primary grape varieties. David Ramey is known for his pioneering work in creating the style of Chardonnay that California is famous for today. The richer, full-bodied style is created through the use of indigenous yeasts, prolonged sur lie ageing, and the use of malolactic and new oak barrel fermentation. Unsurpringly, varietal Chardonnay features heavily in the portfolio. Grapes are sourced from notable vineyards such as Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River as well as Hyde in the Carneros of Napa Valley. Ramey also produces a collection of Cabernet Sauvignon, most notably from the Pedregal Vineyard in Oakville as well as a small amount of Syrah. These wines are well-received and met with high acclaim. Ramey achieved his graduate degree at the University of California at Davis, where his thesis on how aromas evolve in wine is still utilized in the industry to understand how a wine will age. After graduation, he worked at Ptrus in Bordeaux, where he learned winemaking techniques that he would bring back with him to the USA. For 16 years, Ramey made wine at some of California’s best-known wineries, including Chalk Hill and Dominus Estate, before founding Ramey Cellars.
