        Reviews:

        • John Gilman: Ramonets golden touch is not better evidenced than with this superb 1997s, that seem destined to be the gold standard for the vintage. The 97 Btard is a dynamite bottle of wine, offering up a complex and complete nose of pear, candied lemon peel, a bit of honey, fine minerality, and vanillin oak. Notably, there is no (not yet) any signs of peppermint, usually a Ramonet trademark. On the palate the wine is full, fresh and racy, with a rock solid core of pristine fruit, impeccable balance, laser-like focus, and great delineation and length on the zesty finish. This is one 97 white Burgundy that displays great grip and finesse to burn. For a young Ramonet it is also remarkably stunning to drink in its youth, though there is certainly plenty more to come.
        • Allen Meadows: While I have had mixed luck with this wine, the bottle in the tasting was lovely with a fresh, spicy and clearly ripe nose of white flower and subtle spice hints plus a touch of pain grill that is also picked up on the mouth coating and delicious medium plus weight flavors that culminate in fine length and punch. There is better than average acidity for the vintage and overall, this has a fine sense of balance.

        Producer Information

Domaine Ramonet is a prominent wine producer in the Burgundy appellations of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The estate’s most important wines are made from Chardonnay from the area’s grand cru vineyards, and are highly collectible, often selling for high prices at auction. Domaine Ramonet makes several red wines from Pinot Noir as well. Pierre Ramonet began buying land on the Montrachet hill in the 1930s and, by the 1950s, owned land in several premier and grand cru vineyards. In the 1970s, he acquired a piece of the famed Le Montrachet site, and now Ramonet owns more than 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards, making wines ranging from village-level to grand and premier cru. The domaine has holdings in Btard-Montrachet (0.6 hectares/1.5 acres), Bienvenues-Btard-Montrachet (0.4 hectares/one acre), Chevalier-Montrachet (a tiny 0.1 hectares/0.2 acres) and Le Montrachet (0.2 hectares/0.5 acres) grand crus Old vines and low yields are the cornerstones of Ramonet’s viticultural philosophy, and vines younger than 18 years are not used in the top cuves. After traditional fermentation, the white wines are kept on lees for an extended period, with battonage happening much less frequently than usual. Both red and white wines are aged in 33 percent new oak. Red vines are primarily held in Chassagne with just over 1.4 hectares (3.4 acres) held across the La Boudriotte, Morgeot and Clos Saint-Jean premier crus. The domaine has another 1.8 hectares (4.4 acres) of Pinot Noir in village-level plots. Domaine Ramonet is now run by Nol and Jean-Claude Ramonet, following the death of their father Pierre in the mid-1990s. The domaine continues to make some of Montrachet’s most highly regarded wines.
