Lakespring was founded by the Battat family and had its first crush in 1980. The winery’s aim has always been to make a modest volume of high quality varietals. Frederick Wildman is the owner of the Lakespring brand and is carefully reshaping the wines to make them even more appealing to a wider audience of California wine drinkers. Currently, the winery produces about 20,000 cases evenly divided between red and white wine. In the early years, Lakespring philosophy was to favor 100% varietal wines selected exclusively from Napa fruit. Lakespring has relied on the talents of consulting winemaker Kerry Damskey to manage recent vintages. Chardonnay is partly barrel fermented and aged in a variety of oaks with lees contact, and partial malolactic. This white is aromatic with ripe fruit and smooth, polished flavors. Sauvignon Blanc is selected from several North Coast regions and its fruity and round rather than herbaceous. Lakespring red wines offer an accessible style with attractive fruit qualities. Merlot has an open, plumy aroma and the soft, friendly “mouthful” Merlot lovers expect. Cabernet Sauvignon will continue to offer the class, which a Napa appellation implies, with distinctive varietal and regional identity. The fruit is cherry and currant in a richly flavored, supple framework with ripe tannins.
